One of the great traditions of prom in the greater Racine area is the motorcade from the schools to the post prom celebration. This year, with Post Prom at the SportPlex in Sturtevant, routes, of course, are a little different.

The good news is that only a handful of roads will closely entirely between 8 and 11 pm, and those streets are all inside the Renaissance Business Park; Renaissance Blvd., Science Drive, Stellar Avenue, and Enterprise Drive.

Lt. Charles Weitzel of the Racine Police Department is leading the coordination, and he said drivers who might be out and about Saturday will be able to travel freely except when the parade of cars is actually using an intersection.

“This isn’t like the presidential motorcade where we shut down streets until the kids are through,” he said. “We’ll keep the motorcade in one lane and drivers can then use the other lane where appropriate. Police from all the area jurisdictions will man intersections and direct traffic as the kids come through, but then the intersection will be open as usual.”

Weitzel asks the community that if they are planning to be out Saturday night to build in a little more travel time to help keep everyone safe.

Spectators who want to watch the Post Prom red carpet arrivals will be able to park in the lot of the Andis Company. We have the details of when, where, and how. Students who need to drop off their car before the festivities can do so in the lot across the street from the Andis Company.

This was originally posted on September 7,2011. Read the actual signed agreement for yourself and decide.

So many questions arose after the Journal Times ran the story about the signed agreement between the City of Racine and John Dickert concerning the lawsuit filed against him where he then sues the city (Bielefeldt v. Dickert). Just legal fees? What about damages if they are awarded? How is this worded? Is the City of Racine looking out for itself and the residents? Through an open records request I obtained the signed document. Here it is

Mount Pleasant Police want to know if anyone recognizes the suspects in the photos attached to this story.

According to police reports, officers responded at 7:18 pm on April 23 to a report of a possibly stolen purse at the Hobby Lobby on Washington Avenue. The victim told officers there were three credit cards, her driver’s license and $150 in cash in her wallet. She said she she cancelled her credit cards and was given instructions to let the MPPD know if any of the cards were used.

The victim called back and reported that one of her cards was used at Walmart for a purchase totaling $303.23 just 20 minutes after she noticed her purse was missing.

Security at Walmart provided video footage to police and investigators were able to pull these photos and compile descriptions of the suspects:

One white male wearing blue jeans, grey sweatshirt and black baseball cap

One white female wearing sweatpants, a maroon sweatshirt, long curly hair

Lt. Scott Geyer of the Mount Pleasant Police Department said the male suspect allegedly tried to use one credit card, but it was declined. The female suspect used a different card and can be seen in the video swiping the card through the reader and signing the electronic pad.

Later that same day, officers were called to Pick-n-Save on Highway 31 because a purse was found in a trash can at the north entrance. Inside were the victim’s three credit cards and her driver’s license. The $150 cash was gone. Video from the grocery store shows a silver, late model Toyota Corolla drive up, the male suspect walking to the garbage can and then getting in the car to drive away.

“We’re hoping that the more people see these photos, the faster we can identify the suspects and pick them up for questioning,” Geyer said.

Anyone with information about these crimes can leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at (262)636-9330, via email through the website www.racine.crimestoppersweb.com or by sending a text message to CRIMES (274637) and typing in RACS with your text message. Tips leading to arrest could mean a reward.

If you are heading to the Sturtevant Sportsplex to watch the post prom activities, on Saturday, here’s what you’ll need to know.

The 2012 Rotary Passport to Prom will be held from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Sturtevant Sportsplex, 10116 Stellar Ave, according to a press release. Hosted by the Downtown Rotary Club, the event will be aired live from 8 to 11 p.m. on WVTV Channel 18. Viewers can also watch Rotary Post Prom online at: www.CW18Milwaukee.com.

Dozens of students helped to plan this year’s gala and created the travel theme. In keeping with their idea, the evening will offer prom-goers the opportunity to travel the world in prom style within the Sportsplex.

Heather Asiyanbi-Mount Pleasant say a Racine man is in custody on eight different counts after they pulled him over, discovered the car he was driving was stolen and found the vehicle filled with stuff he’d taken out of several unlocked vehicles.

Simply locking car doors could have prevented an alleged thief from stealing items found inside several vehicles, including bottles of prescription drugs. Locking up would also have stopped him from stealing the car in which he got caught.

Mount Pleasant Police say Kevin Lambert, 21, of Racine, was arrested at 2:41 am Wednesday allegedly driving a stolen Chevy Cavalier. He was also reportedly in possession of a few things he’d taken from unlocked vehicles. Lambert is being held in the Racine County Jail on a cash bond of $7,500.

According to Lt. Scott Geyer of the MPPD, officers responded to calls of a suspicious vehicle, with a vague description of the driver, on Old Mill Drive. When police arrived, they observed the car leaving the area and determined that the driver might match the description. Officers followed and initiated a stop near the intersection of Floyd and Northwestern Avenue.

A quick call to the owner of the car revealed that the vehicle was stolen so officers searched the car. Police discovered that the driver, Lambert, was also in possession of several items – prescription drugs among them – that he reportedly took from unlocked vehicles in Mount Pleasant and in the City of Racine.

“We urge residents to lock their car doors,” Geyer said. “This suspect just walked around trying door handles. When he found a car unlocked, he took small items he could carry and that he thought might have some value.”

Another step Geyer wants residents to take is to keep an outside light on at the front and back doors.

“We know it’s frustrating for the victims, but since this young man wasn’t forcing entry, just locking car doors could have prevented a number of these crimes,” he added.

Lambert is being held on a number of charges including operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent, three counts of possession of a controlled substance, receiving stolen property, and two counts of bail jumping.

A second suspect fled the scene, but police do not yet have a description. Geyer said the case remains under investigation.

A large trail of blood led police from the driveway, where Jonathan Kwiatkowski was stabbed, into the house, where he lay bleeding from the throat.

Wind Point police officer John Lewis was the first to respond to the Kwiatkowski home at 2:21 a.m. April 4, 2011, after Jonathan Kwiatkowski was fatally stabbed. He testified Wednesday in the trial for Sean Forester-Hoare, the neighbor charged with killing the 21-year-old man. If Forester-Hoare is convicted, he faces life in prison. This is the second day of testimony in the trial; read Tuesday’s story here.

When Lewis got inside the home in the 5300 block of Valley Trail Drive, he saw Lori Kwiatkowski kneeling on the floor by her son, who had a large puncture wound in his throat.

“I asked his mother if he was breathing and if he had a pulse,” Lewis said. “Just after she said yes, he started gasping.”

Rolling Jonathan over, Lewis found a faint pulse, and then began doing chest compressions while Lori performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

“I always have the hope that I can help do something,” Lewis said.

The scene was chaotic, said Caledonia Police officer Kimberly Migazzi, the second officer on the scene. Tim Kwiatkowski, Jonathan’s father, and Corey, Jonathan’s brother, paced outside. When Migazzi went into the house with a defibrillator, she saw Lewis was doing chest compressions on Jonathan.

“I notified dispatch that we had an unresponsive male, there was a large amount of blood loss, and the defibrillator advised no shock,” she said.

From the experts: Jonathan Kwiatkowski died of blood loss, after a knife severed an artery in his neck and his trachea, the tube that carries air into the lungs, according to Waukesha County Associate Medical Examiner Zelda Okia, who performed the autopsy on Jonathan. A toxicologist with the Wisconsin State Crime Lab explained Forester-Hoare used marijuana within four hours of when he was tested the morning of April 4, 2011.

Sean Forester-Hoare had a cut on his chest, Scherer testified. When he was asked about the cut, Forester-Hoare said he must have gotten the injury the night before and that he often gets injuries because he is into martial arts.

Racine County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Keith Dobesh, was at the hospital talking to Jonathan’s parents when he was told Forester-Hoare was on the way in an ambulance. “(Forester-Hoare) was seated in an ambulance cot in an upright position, and he had a big smile on his face,” Dobesh said.

Did you find this odd? Asked Racine County District Attorney Rich Chiapete.

“I did,” Dobesh said.
