On December 8th 2013, the Racine County Sheriff’s Office responded to many reports of motor vehicle crashes on I-94 both northbound and southbound. The crashes began to be reported shortly after snow began to fall heavily just before 10:00 AM.

Deputies and Wisconsin State Troopers responded finding numerous property damage and injury crashes. There was one fatality crash on I94 Southbound just south of 2 Mile Road in the Town of Yorkville involving an adult male. The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating this unfortunate fatality.

Occupants of the vehicles involved in the reported crashes were transported to several local meeting places where interviews were being conducted by Sheriff’s Investigators.

The conditions on the Interstate at the time of the crash were snow covered and very slippery with ice present. The southbound lanes were closed and were not reopened until after 4:00 PM.

There have been approximately 60 reported crashes in Racine County as of 3:30 PM, with about half of those being on I-94. We anticipate that number growing as the investigation unfolds.

Assisting the Racine Sheriff’s Office during this storm were several agencies to include the Wisconsin State Patrol, Caledonia PD, Mount Pleasant PD and Sturtevant PD.

We are asking the traveling motorists in Racine County that if you must travel, please do so slowly and allow sufficient time to stop.

  1. Way to go Racine. Glad to see that busting speeders out on I94 is more of a priority than salting the streets. We all knew the snow was coming. Why is it that Illinois didn’t have problems on their interstate? Pathetic!
