On 10/24/2012 at 2:50 PM, officers from the Mt. Pleasant Police Department responded to a car vs. pedestrian crash on STH 20 in the 7100 block across from Dairy Queen. The suspect vehicle was described as a red Pontiac. The driver was not identified but was believed to be male.
The victim was a 15 year old Case H.S. student. Witnesses reported that they observed a female run across the street towards Dairy Queen while crossing over STH 20 from the median break. A witness in the center westbound lane observed the victim cross in front of his vehicle. As she continued to run, a vehicle in the right westbound lane (red Pontiac) collided with her. The victim’s view of the suspect vehicle may have been obscured by the witness’s vehicle.
The crash location was not a designated cross walk area. The victim was later cited for pedestrian darting into traffic.
A witness to the crash was not able to obtain the plate number from the suspect vehicle. However, a witness observed a piece of the victim’s clothing hanging on the front of the suspect’s vehicle. An officer did recover it along with other evidence that may have come from the suspect’s vehicle.
This case remains under investigation. The victim did not sustain life threatening injuries however she was taken to a local hospital where she is receiving treatment.
