Angel L. Cartagena, 35, was sentenced to 18 months in prison followed by 12 months on extended supervision from Racine County Circuit Judge Eugene Gasiorkiewicz. Judge Gasiorkiewicz told Cartagena “What you did here was inexcusable. What you did here was indefensible”. Judge Gasiorkiewicz told the court. “I have to protect those who can’t protect themselves,” while holding up a picture of Zoey.
The original criminal complaint states-The couple allegedly argued on Nov. 7, 2011 and she traveled to Illinois to stay with some friends for a few days. As she was returning home four days later, she received a call from Cartagena saying that he gave her dog away, but when she arrived she found blood all over a bed and holes in the wall, the complaint said. Cartagena told her that he had beaten the 5-year-old, 7-pound Boston terrier to death with a broom handle and that the holes in the wall were from his attempted blows, the complaint said. Cartagena additionally was accused of grabbing the woman and violently shaking her, repeatedly butting her with his head, according to the complaint.
