Man who beat dog to death returns on warrant

UPDATED….Angel Cartagena appeared today at 2:30 on his return on warrant. Circuit court records show his bond was reinstated and his sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 4, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. The warrant was vacated and he remains free on bond.

Angel L. Cartagena, 35, Racine, was scheduled to be sentenced yesterday in the beating death of his girlfriends dog. Cartagena pleaded no contest July 9 to a charge of mistreatment of animals causing death, which is a felony. The courts issued a warrant and police have orders to arrest him. (CCAP records reflect that a warrant was issued)

In the original complaint: Cartagena and his girlfriend allegedly argued in November 2011, she left to stay with friends. As she was returning home Nov. 11, Cartagena called to say he gave her dog away, according to the complaint. When she returned, she found blood on a bed and holes in the wall, according to the complaint.

Cartagena later told her he beat the 5-year-old, 7-pound Zoey to death with a broom handle — and those holes in the wall were from his attempted blows.  Cartagena also was accused of grabbing her and violently shaking her and repeatedly butting her with his head, according to the complaint.

  3. This “thing” because I can not even call him a man has done enough damage to many people and now he kills a dog? I sure hope the justice system finally does something to him! He has gotten away with too much already!
