From the Mount Pleasant Patch. A man just looking for a place to sleep off his drunk was woken up unexpectedly Sunday morning by members of the South Shore Fire Department after they extinguished the remnants of a bonfire.
According to a police report from the Mount Pleasant Police Department, officers called for SSFD at 5:17 a.m. Sunday to the 6900 block of Durand Avenue for a report of a brush fire. Luckily, when firefighters arrived, they discovered a bonfire instead and were able to extinguish it shortly after arrival.
The home nearby was not damaged, but during a search of the premises to be sure there were no other fires present, firefighters discovered Daymeon McCune, 25, of Milwaukee sleeping in the garage.
Police were called back to the scene and per McCune’s request, took him to the Iron Skillet truckstop/restaurant so he could arrange transportation back to Milwaukee.
On the way, he told officers he had been at a bachelor party when he got kicked out so he left on foot. He realized he was too drunk to go any further so he stumbled into the unlocked garage and passed out in a trailer there. He said he knew nothing about the bonfire and was unaware firefighters were on scene until they woke him up.
McCune was not cited for trespassing because the home was vacant and a property owner could not be located. Though McCune is a smoker, police had nothing to tie him to the bonfire so he was released at Iron Skillet.
