Neighbors called 911 after they noticed black smoke pouring out of the eaves of the home around the garage at 6:40 p.m. at a residence located at 4847 Aberdeen Drive.
Two off-duty officers with the Caledonia Police Department broke down the door after to see if anyone was inside. Homeowners Brett and Deborah McDonald were not inside at the time, but the officers saved their two dogs from the residence.
Fire personnel from the Caledonia Fire and the South Shore departments along with officers from the Caledonia Police Department responded to the scene.
Battalion Chief Gene Roeder said the fire originated in the garage.
“We don’t know what the cause of the fire is and its still under investigation,” he said. “But the dogs are OK.”
The estimated damage to the home is $5,000 and the estimated damage to the garage contents is $10,000.
