Jill I am so sorry that we couldn’t have done more this morning, my thoughts and prayers are with you and everyone right now
From the Caledonia Patch A young woman was found dead this morning at the bottom of the Vulcan Materials rock quarry.
Rebecca Youngbeck Ryan, 22, of Racine, had been missing since Tuesday morning. Friends and family members were out looking for her at locations in Caledonia and Racine Saturday morning. Jill Ryan, Rebecca’s mother, said she learned that Rebecca’s body was found shortly after 11:30 a.m.
“I guess she’s not in anymore pain, but I couldn’t save her,” Jill said.
Sgt. Brian Wall, of the Caledonia Police Department, confirmed that a body was recovered from the quarry at about 10:09 a.m. and they believe the body found is Rebecca.
“No foul play is suspected,” Wall said. “An autopsy is expected to be done on Monday.”
A Caledonia resident had told Jill that they saw a woman they believe looked like Rebecca in Walgreen’s pharmacy on Four Mile Road and Douglas Avenue late Tuesday afternoon trying to get medications.
Jill said she told the police about what she had learned and they are following up on the lead.
Joyce Gandy, Rebecca’s cousin, said her cousin was so young; that it doesn’t make sense that she would take her own life.
“But the way things were going leading up to this, with everything going on, maybe she did,” Gandy said. “But this is so sad, it makes you realize how important your family really is.”
Rebecca was last seen at about 9 a.m. Tuesday near her home in the 2800 block of Jean Avenue in Racine. She was carrying her backpack, which was found Tuesday afternoon alongside the road near 4-½ Mile and Charles road in Caledonia, said her mother.
Rebecca struggled with paranoid tendencies and detachment issues, but she was not on any medications and hadn’t sought help for her mental health issues, Jill said.
Prior to Tuesday, Rebecca hadn’t slept for several days and Jill had been trying to convince her daughter to seek help.
Calls have been made to the Caledonia Police Department, but they have not been returned.
