More questions than answers regarding “Henry the dog”

There seems to be more questions than answers regarding Henry. Here is the documentation obtained regarding the response regarding Joanne and Henry. Here is the initial call that I had originally gotten regarding Henry the dog and Joanne. It was classified as a welfare check on 3/9 printed on 3/12. On 3/13 supplemental reports were filed. The day the tickets and seizure order were delivered.

Here are the 2 “supplemental reports filed by both officers” (some private information has been removed addresses, phones to protect privacy) Here are items that I think are inconsistencies regarding what happened. The disposition and end result of the call on the “Call detail report” not matching on the “Supplemental Narrative Report”.

As stated on the Call Detail report a call was made to a relative to check on Joanne, it is not mentioned on the Supplemental report. It’s also noted that on one report that “joanne was throwing food to the dog” but yet on the report it’s noted that officers had to tell Joanne to go upstairs and it’s apparent that she was able to go up and down the stairs on her own.

In the report when asked if she had contacted anyone about help with Henry the report stated that she had said no. The caller who reported to police had “heard Henry had fallen down the stairs”. The court complaint stated she called for help getting Henry up the stairs but was refused by that person.

One report states that Joanne was told CHS was taking the dog because of the condition (No mention of of being put under), the other report states that she was told that he was going to be put under.

One report said that Joanne was told to leave the basement which she initially refused to do but then did go outside. The other report stated that officers escorted her outside from the basement after the dog was removed. One report states that Joanne was throwing food to the dog.  The other report it’s not mentioned at all that Joanne wasn’t able to go into the basement to feed the dog. In reports its stated that Joanne was able to get into the basement.

None of us were there that day so the only ones that could witness what happened were the officers, Joanne and the Humane Officer from CHS. There is no documentation from on scene showing what exactly was wrong with Henry other than a mass and him having trouble getting up and walking. There seems to be more questions than answers, and too many grey areas.

  1. I too have a 13 year old Springer Spaniel that has fatty tumors throughout her body which is common in older Springers. She also has a cancerous large red tumor under her tail and has been seen by a vet who stated she is doing very well. She also has arthritis and has trouble going up and down stairs. She moves a little slower now but is in NO WAY in pain. She ALSO cannot get up fast and will not get up if she doesn’t want to or if she is scared (as Henry was I am sure). She will snap at people(except me) that try to move her too fast or invade her area that she does not know(as Henry seems to have done). She is a very high strung dog (common in Springers)especially if she cannot see me. She cries at the top of the stairs until I come up with the laundry. Reading about Henry’s story has truly disgusted me. t
That he and Joanne were treated so harshly is beyond anything I could have imagined. The only difference between us is that I am not 74 years old and I have a great family that would never send the police over to check on me rather than do it themselves. My prayers are with Joanne and Henry. That poor dog should never have been put down without her there and without her permission. It breaks my heart knowing how scared he must have been. CHS needs to be held accountable for their actions and the people that let this happen need to be let go. We as a community cannot let this go unanswered.

  2. I am very upset about this whole situation and the way Henry was taken. No one ever offered to find help for Joanne and Henry. I hope her tickets are dismessed. On another note, I am saddened that people think they have a right to tell someone when their beloved pet needs to die. Our pets are just like family and people think it’s just a simple decision to end a pet’s life. They are entitled to live to their last day’s end, in my opinion, with family at their side, holding them in their arms. Why are we such a throw away society? “Oh your pet is sick you should put it down.” I don’t think so.

  3. I agree with you Really. Its sad the way he died but he IS NOT suffering anymore. I know one of the officers that was called to the scene and the officer would have helped if thought was right and it just wasn’t the police did what they were supposed to which was call CHS but the way CHS handled the situation is what I think why people are soo upset.

  4. Why is Henry in the Dump? Isn’t he evidence? He was supposed to have a tumor that was a big issue. Wouldn’t it be important to have that as evidence? Sounds to me like they ditched the evidence on purpose.

  7. Marilyn Benson, president of Countryside, actually made a comment on Channel 12 news tonight. She said that it is a very difficult decision for someone, who owned a dog for 12 years, to end their dog’s life. So, Benson rationalizes that Countryside is right in making that decision for these poor unknowledgable and emotional slobs who cannot think for themselves. I am so glad that Countryside knows what is best for everyone who owns a pet and is willing to step forward to end the pet’s life when Countryside sees fit. Benson still doesn’t and can’t address the real issue here. COUNTRYSIDE BROKE THE LAW. They took a dog from an owner. They didn’t notify the owner of her rights to get the dog back in 7 days. They killed the dog on the day they took the dog. Benson told Channel 12 that Countryside was giving up the animal control contract in Racine as if that is going to repair the incompetence at Countryside. I wouldn’t give these people one red cent ever again. There are plenty of other animal shelters out there who need help.

  8. I asked on another comment if any pictures had been taken. After reading the police report I feel this dog is in a much better place. It’s to bad the owner has lost her pet, but someone had to make the right decision on the suffering this dog was going through. Has her family come by to see if this woman needs help herself? Very sad situation…

  9. MF I wondered at first the same thing. But I don’t think anyone took pictures. It sounded to me from all the reports that CHS seized the dog, took it back and euthanized it. That worries me as a pet owner. 1. They violated that woman’s consitutional rights to due process. 2. They disobeyed their own rules/policy and I think State law to by euthanizing before the 7 day rule. My final concern is that they disposed of the body which I would think is evidence, which would show exactly what was wrong and if Henry was in pain. The woman should be able to get Henry’s body back and do an autopsy on the dog to get concrete answers after the allegations were made and she was cited. It would be pretty one sided and I would be gravely concerned if Henry’s body was disposed of and any type of documentation was brought forth by Countryside, because without a body they can’t prove anything.

    • Ilovemycat…I agree with everything you said. I should have finished my train of thoughts in print. I guess I was looking at the dogs continued suffering for that additional 7 day waiting period. In this age of lawsuits and problems…photos and videos of the entire process should have been mandatory. Maybe (hopefully) someone learned a valuable lesson with Henry. Ilovemybeagle…
